Infant Cribs - Finding The Best Crib At The Best Price
by Randi Reese
One of the first important decisions you will make about your new baby is the purchase of a new infant crib. There are many choices available and you will want to shop for the best one that you can find while still keeping it affordable.
Safety needs to be the first and foremost concern of any parent when choosing a new infant crib. Looks may be important but should take a backseat to design and safety. All new cribs that are manufactured in the United States must adhere to strict safety standards. These standards are reviewed by the National Safety Council.
A good crib is a safe crib that has few frills. The best cribs are those which are the simplest since there is less to worry about that can go wrong. A good crib does not need to be expensive. When shopping for the crib be sure that the crib is well made. Check the display model to ensure that it is sturdy. The crib should have a sticker which shows that it adheres to the NSC standards in infant crib safety.
The infant crib should not have any loose hardware which could cause a choking hazard. The mattress must fit snugly into the crib frame. If you can fit two fingers between the mattress and crib frame the mattress is too small. If the space is too large an infant can become trapped between the mattress and the side of the crib.
Avoid any extra cutouts on the foot end or head end of the crib. These can become hazards in which the child can become stuck. If the sides of the crib are adjustable be sure that they cannot be moved too easily – they should lock into place. Once in use always check the crib at least monthly to be sure that there are no loose parts or anything that could cause a safety hazard to the infant.
